'Margaret' Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot
Produced since 1992 and named in honour of Heather's French great grandmother, our 'Margaret has been our take on the Left Bank Bordeaux blend.
'Margaret' is sourced entirely from the Woodlands Vineyard. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the slope that wraps around a 90-degree radius from the east to the north, receiving a great deal of direct sunlight from morning to mid-afternoon. The Merlot and Malbec come from the west-facing slope of deep loam soil.
This fruit was hand-picked between the 24th March and 17th April 2019, gravity destemmed, hand sorted berry by berry, then transferred to stainless steel fermenters. The must spent 22 days on skins, with 50% of the wine fermenting without added yeast. After pressing, the wine was aged for 19 month in French barrels, of which 56% were new.
Our 2019 Margaret is a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Malbec, and 9% Merlot.
2019 'Margaret' has an intense crimson hue. The nose is seductive and inviting, with notes of ripe cassis and mulberry, balanced with violet, cedar, and toasty oak - classic 'Margaret'.
On the palate, there is a svelte seamless quality to the entry. Following, there is a wonderful sense of flow - sumptuous red fruits (cherry, Doris plums, mulberry) overlay the tannin underneath, and lead to a generous and long lasting finish. Honestly, it's just lovely.
Enjoy this wine with plum-glazed duck breast, or crispy mushrooms with garlic and thyme on creamy white bean purée.
Though this wine can be enjoyed now, it will cellar well past 2030.
